Mind-Boggling: Are You Falling for Your Brain’s Tricks?
I've heard it all from my clients:
"I’m already doing so much, I can’t do that too!" ...
"I was so busy, I couldn’t keep track of what I was eating." ...
"I couldn’t lose weight because it was my birthday."
Sound familiar? Trust me, we all do it.
We think we're just stating facts, but in reality, these are excuses our brains concoct to keep us from stepping into uncharted territory.
You see, our brains are wired to see uncertainty as a potential threat. They mean well. They're trying to protect us, but they don’t always know what’s best for us.
When we tell ourselves these sorts of things, it doesn't mean we're lazy or incapable. It just means we're human.
Our goal isn't to eliminate excuses. The brain will always find new ones. The goal is to just get really good at catching ourselves.
When we blindly believe our unuseful stories, we're stuck. We stop problem-solving, take no action, and nothing changes.
So the next time you notice yourself making an excuse, ask "Is this entirely true, or is this my brain tricking me?"
And try this powerful shift. Change "I can't" to "I won't."
This small tweak clarifies that your excuse is really a choice. It might be a hard choice, but saying "I won’t" puts the decision back in your hands.
Small mindset shifts are huge. Don't let excuses hold you back!
